You can find this gallery in Downtown Disney West Side, next to Sosa Family Cigar Co. and across from Bongo’s. Sister to the original located in Chicago’s historic Chinatown, Hoypoloi Gallery is an Eastern-inspired “unique boutique”* type of art gallery that carries multiple artists (associates will tell you the number is close to 300) and a wide assortment of small gift items, including jewelry, butterflies + Asian tzotchkes, packed into a cluttered space. Its name is a play on the Greek word hoipolloi which euphemistically refers to the ‘common people’ in the gallery’s motto: “An Uncommon Gallery for the Common People.” Unfortunately, the word more closely connotes ‘the unwashed masses’ and this is something to bear in mind if you choose to visit the gallery on Friday + Saturday nights. Between the swarms of tourists and the flood of locals, it can get pretty sweaty and crowded. The best time for browsing is definitely the morning or afternoon. Hoypoloi features artists both established and relatively unknown. It goes to great lengths to be eclectic and has some truly wonderful glass pieces from around the country and Murano, Italy. A highlight of any visit would be the original paintings by Jeff Laibson . These highly-stylized abstractions of instruments and jazz music are vibrant, energetic and well-priced (about $1595-1800 for the larger works). For those who want to take home an interesting souvenir, this gallery is for you. Hoypoloi even offers domestic and international shipping. Local artist Alan Foxx is available on weekends for personalized dedications or a chat.
